Clients in the Body Image Group too often feel ashamed, self-conscious or anxious about their body. As a result, they may be preoccupied with achieving or maintaining a particular body type, or avoiding enjoyable activities due to body shame. The body image group helps clients feel more comfortable, confident and connected with their bodies.
Topics include
- Understanding how you view body: What you like and dislike
- Seeing the environmental and developmental factors that shape your body image
- Viewing your body and images of yourself with more compassion
- Visualizing your life after you have learned to accept your body
- Exploring what other insecurities are hidden by body image obsession
- Appreciating all that your body can help you do and experience and learn about yourself
- Learning how to respect, honor, trust and take care of your body

Mindful Eating Group
Mindful eating is part of mindfulness—observing and accepting sensations, thoughts and feelings in the present moment.
Mindless Eating
We live in a time and place where food is always available, and portions are often excessive. Mindless eating means the needs and sensations of our body are not the primary considerations in determining when and how much to eat, and thus we tend to consume more calories than needed. Mindless eating can often involve ‘eating in a trance’ which is the core of binge eating and compulsive eating patterns.

Mindful Eating
Mindful eating is paying attention moment by moment to all the sensations of eating without distraction or judgement. It focuses on sensations produced whenever food is in your mouth, such as tastes, textures, sounds, and the pleasure these create. It registers your body's appetite signals before, during and after each bite—how empty your stomach is and how much nourishment your body needs. Mindful eating teaches us how to notice and adhere to our body’s signals of “enough fuel” and to avoid the discomfort of an overly-full stomach. Mindful eating is a goal in and of itself, with the benefits of a deeper and more peaceful connection with food and with your body.
Though not designed as a weight-loss program, mindful eating has helped me, and many clients lose weight as because it prevents overeating and binge eating.
The Mindful Eating group is a ten-session course with the following topics:
- What is Mindfulness? How do we apply it to eating?
- Hunger: What is it and Physical versus Emotional Hunger?
- Emotions and Body Sensations
- Identifying Conditioned Patterns around Eating
- Fullness, Satiety and Satisfaction from Food
- Food and Mood
- Self-soothing without food
- Sharing a Meal, Sharing Experiences, Reminders to Future Self

Binge Eating DBT Sklls Groups
DBT or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is a treatment that combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Eastern philosophies and emphasizes the development of mindfulness with non-judgmental acceptance. DBT teaches more than 40 concrete skills and strategies that increases self-awareness and improves your ability to soothe yourself, tolerate distress and cope effectively with emotions. With DBT skills, you can avoid unwanted or harmful behavior including binge eating, emotional overeating, addictive eating, and/or purging.
Research confirms that group instruction in DBT skills, combined with weekly individual meetings, is extremely effective in treating Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorder. DBT groups offers a validating environment where you can learn and support others struggling with their own eating issues.
I lead DBT skills education and coaching groups that meet weekly. Ideally, you will also meet with me individually once a week to discuss how you are applying the skills you are learning and to develop strategies for challenging situations. You may also continue with your current therapist while attending the DBT group.

Individual DBT Skills Education and Coaching
If a group setting is inconvenient or uncomfortable for you (or during times in the year when I don't have a group running), I teach and coach DBT skills in private personal sessions.
I can also coach DBT as an adjunct to your current therapy, if that professional is not a DBT expert.
